I’m a Friends fan to say the least. The show lasted into ten series spanning over 20 episodes each, and episodes that are still played regularly on TV today, still 10 years on. The show has won major awards, for both on screen performance and critical acclaim. I have the box set, have visited the set, and got the t-shirt. But why it is so popular?
Characters. Ross, Rachel, Monica, chandler, phoebe and Joey are some of the most recognisable personalities to grace our screens. Most importantly they are likeable yet human, each with different personalities and flaws that make you want to know more about them.
Storylines. Despite being a sitcom, friends has clear and ever evolving plot lines, bringing in the audience and making them hungry for more.
Romance. We all love a romance and Ross and Rachel were it on friends. With their, will they, won’t they, storyline; they added greater suspense to the on screen drama.
Chandler and Monica looked at the more grown up issues of marriage, fertility and moving out to the suburbs.
Physical comedy. Friends is witty and easy to watch but they add into the mix some great physical comedy, especially from the male characters Chandler and Joey.
Set and Costumes. The sets on friends are beautifully designed yet remain constant throughout each season, creating a vibe with the audience and a warm familiarity.
Each character has an individual style with the most vibrant being phoebe, with all this being set against the stunning background of New York City.
Awesome guest stars. Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Charlie Sheen, Danny Devito but to name a few plus some fabulous recurring unknowns such as Gunther and Janice gave the series different ways to enhance storylines and engage the audience.
Animals and children. Friends’ breaks the oldest law of TV ‘never work with animals or children.’ Marcel the monkey was my personal favourite.
